Basaltina is a volcanic stone that has been used in architecture for
centuries. Quarried near Rome, it was used by the ancient Romans to
build roads and monuments. Then in 1925, a man by the name of
Giuseppe Tecchi Cristofori Celiani established a company that would
quarry and manufacture the stone for years to come. His passion was
passed from generation to generation, and the company remains
As its name suggests, Basaltina is a basalt. It is rich in magnesium,
feldspar, pyroxene and iron, with hints of olivine and amphibole; all
of which are siliceous materials similar to those in a granite.
Although it boasts the durability of a granite, it has the consistent
coloration, markings and subtlety of a limestone. The fissures and
small holes in the surface are evidence of the earth's natural gasses
flowing through and escaping from the stone. These holes can be left
in their natural state or can be filled, depending on the use of the
stone and the clients' Basaltina is extremely versatile and one of the most popular stones in the Stone Source offering. It can be used for interior walls and floors, including heavy traffic commercial floors. It is also frost resistant and suitable for exterior cladding and pavers. The honed and filled material is perfect for kitchen countertops. According to one client "It's clean, contemporary and easy to work into a color palette." Stone Source supplies a special selection of non-directional Basaltina called Quarry Reserve. This selection has smaller holes and greater uniformity for those with discriminating tastes. Please note that specifiers should indicate the "Quarry Reserve" selection in their specifications.
